Here are some of the best of the best of 2011. Brace yourself: as there were a lot of ‘bests’ this year.

Wishing you the best in 2012!

For his 6th birthday, my nephew’s big request was to visit the ‘factory’.
I picked him up from kindergarten and this was the look of extreme excitement
he had on his face as we made our way to the factory.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have any yellow ink to mix his favorite orange color (PMS 144).
So he helped pick the perfect red for his special edition birthday print.

Earlier, I had ordered a photopolymer plate shaped like a robot which just so happens to one of his favorite things.

We ran the press. And inspected the proofs.

My nephew set the type all by himself. Isn’t he the cutest?

Wow. It is a big day for Five Sparrows.

My first ever inspiration shoot is up on one of my favorite wedding blogs: Style Me Pretty – California! Wow. I am just giddy with excitement.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to team up with Marisa Nicole, Weddings & Events and Kelly Makes Things which was such an honor. Seriously, I am so incredibly inspired by these two women. Every time we meet, I leave completely overwhelmed (in a good way) by all the creativity we’ve dreamed up during coffee dates.

And I’m happy to say we’ll be working together again soon. So stay tuned for our next inspiration shoot – coming in February.

But for now, click on over to see more photos of our Route 66 inspiration shoot via Style Me Pretty California.

A million thank yous to everyone involved in this super fun shoot.

Last week I had my first visitor. My 4-year-old niece requested that she visit the ‘factory’ where I work.

Just big enough to reach the lever.

She loved touching every surface and machine part. Luckily, this is a hands-on ‘factory’.

I let her pick out the letters of her name from my metal type foundry.

And she inspected our print like a pro.

When she visited, I hadn’t gotten my inks in yet, so I promised that next time we would put some ink on the press and try it out for real. In the meantime, she didn’t have any hesitation picking out her favorite shade of pink from about 45 different options. In case you’re curious, she picked PMS#226.

Step 1 of retrieving, unpacking, inspecting and re-assembling the press is now complete.
I’m really enjoying documenting each step of the process. The following images are from days one and two.

Now on to Step 2 which is to ink the press and do some print test runs.
There is pure joy and excitement ’round these parts.

She’s finally up and ready to go! Hooray!

Unpacked, re-built and ready to go.

I can’t wait to start printing!

I know you were hoping for the big Letterpress debut today. (I am too.) But she’s almost ready.
Stay tuned and follow along for the big reveal.

In the meantime, I want to share a video sent to me by my dear friend who is the Director of the St. Andrews Charity Fashion Show. From now until Friday December 9th, 100% of the donations to the Muir Maxwell Trust will be matched. $ for $£ for £. Join in and you can help purchase an epilepsy alarm for families in need. £8 is all it takes.

So take a look at the video below (and donate too). It’s a great cause. Thanks for your support!

we went to Chick-Fil-A.

And then after that, we traveled to the City of Commerce.
To a sketchy freight yard late at night to retrieve this:
crate
The crate containing my old newly restored letterpress machine!

But here’s the best part: do you see the shadowy “5″ on the left side? Pretty cool and pretty weird, right?
Hello, little letterpress. Welcome to Five Sparrows.

My Craftsman 6.5×10 letterpress has arrived in the area.
And I’m going to pick it up today!
I’m secretly hoping it makes that beautiful metallic clinking noise like this one:
